Musky Genetics, Propagation, and Stocking

I recently was sent a copy of a DNR Fisheries report that discusses genetic conservation practices and recommendations for Wisconsin musky propagation and stocking. If anyone is interested in obtaining a copy of this I can send you a downloaded Adobe document. Warning for us civilians, some of this stuff gets pretty "techie" so don't expect the same kind of discussion that you have with your buddies. However if you want a view as to what was being discussed in 2010 when this report was published it's pretty interesting stuff.

Temps finally dropping. The last couple days I've seen temps anywhere from upper 40's (48 degrees on Watersmeet Lake Saturday 10/12) To lower 50's with 54 being about the highest. With our low air temperatures and nothing warmer on the horizon this trend should continue. If you're no aware, suckers are in short supply this year due to flooding in the rivers where they are trapped. Interestingly I've still been finding fish shallow. As the bigger lakes turn and the little ones continue to cool down that should get those fish moving around more and not locked into the shallow weeds. I suspect that we will also see the feeding windows rapidly narrowing. Pay attention to the major and minor solunar periods and moon phases. Keep on your toes because when those windows happen they're usually short lived and you may have all your action for the day within a one hour or less period. Good luck and stay safe.

On the Water Meeting #2 August 6

Join us for August monthly On the Water Meeting.

This month, we will all gather and fish the lakes surrounding Minocqua. The Minocqua Chain will serve as home base, but is NOT REQUIRED that you fish it. All participants are free to fish anywhere they choose from 4-9pm.

At 9:30pm, we will all meet at Heart II Bar and Grill for post-fishing social and other club updates.

Kleeba Challenge - Team Members Needed

Coming up June 14-16 the Headwaters Chapter will be hosting the annual Kleeba Challenge Tournament. This is a friendly tournament with teams representing all the Muskies Inc. chapters in the state. This is right in our backyard folks and it sure would be nice to have a couple Northwoods Muskies Inc. teams participating. If you would like more info or want to be on a team please post below and we'll put together some teams. More info can be found at the Headwaters website too.

Wausau Chapter Central Wisconsin Tournament

Headwaters DNR/Guides Meeting April 23

On Tuesday April 23 (the day before our meeting) the Headwaters Chapter will once again host the annual DNR/Guides day. They have graciously extended an invitation to our members to attend. This is an opportunity for the attendees to interact with various DNR personnel. They typically give updates as to ongoing projects and surveys. There is plenty of time for questions and one on one conversations as well. There is no fee for attending so if you just have to scratch that fishing itch and would like to know more about what is going on in our area this is a great chance to get yourself educated.

April 24 Membership Meeting - New Member Incentive!

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting. As an incentive to build our membership we will give a free musky lure to anyone joining the chapter or renewing a lapsed membership at the meeting. We have 20 Super Cisco lures from Tackle Industries and will give them out while they last!
